What is Pigmented Lesions

Pigmented lesions often involve melanin (brown pigment), resulting in small or large areas of the skin appearing brown, black or even blue in colour. Although most often benign, pigmented lesions can also be malignant or cancerous in some cases.

Benign pigmented lesions are very common and come in many forms. These include:

  • Freckles
  • Moles
  • Melasma
  • Age spots
  • Lentigines

Where do my pigmented lesions come from?

Pigmented lesions can occur in a number of ways. Some pigmented lesions like freckles are a result of genetics where patients are simply born with them. Other factors can include life cycle and hormonal changes, which can all affect the distribution of melanin in your skin, leading to a range of pigmented lesions. They can also come as a result of prolonged sun exposure. Pigmented skin lesions differ from vascular lesions, which are not caused by sun damage and appear differently under dermatoscopy.

How does laser pigmentation lesion removal work?

Light-based, laser and IPL treatments remove the appearance of spots and skin hyperpigmentation by targeting the melanin in the darkened area and dispersing it. The tiny fragments of the pigment are then cleared by the lymphatic system through a natural process. This results in the clearing of all of the pigmentation layers which in turn reveals even-toned, unblemished skin. The treatments are specially designed for patient comfort and are safe and effective for all skin types and colours, including dark skin.
