Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that affects the skin. Typically, skin cells grow deep in the skin, rise to the surface and eventually fall off.  This entire cycle typically lasts 4 weeks. Patients who suffer from psoriasis however, experience skin production which occurs only in a matter of days. Because there is no time for this skin to fall off, the rapid growth eventually causes  skin to build up. This results in thick, white, silvery, or red scaly patches of skin. The scaly patches can also experience inflammation and may often crack and bleed.

Psoriasis usually develops on joints such as elbows and knees. They may also develop on the face, hands, feet and neck.

While the true cause of psoriasis is still unclear, many doctors and scientists point to two key factors: the immune system and genetics.

Types of psoriasis

Psoriasis is commonly grouped into five separate categories.

  • Plaque psoriasis
  • Guttate psoriasis
  • Pustular psoriasis
  • Inverse psoriasis
  • Erythrodermic psoriasis

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a condition that causes loss of skin pigmentation or skin colour in patches. These discolourations often increase in size over time.

Vitiligo occurs when cells that produce melanin die or stop functioning, and can subsequently not be reproduced. Vitiligo can naturally occur at any age and its causes are unclear. It can be a result of an immune system disorder or family history. However, severe trauma such as burns can also destroy pigment cells. Stretch marks, acne scars, post-surgical and traumatic scars may also produce a similar loss of pigment.

Vitiligo affects people of all skin types, though it is more noticeable in people with darker skin. While the condition is not life-threatening or contagious, it can often lead to increased levels of stress, low confidence and/or poor self esteem.

Is there a cure for vitiligo?

A common misconception is that there is “no cure” for the loss of skin pigmentation associated with Vitiligo. However, by harnessing advances in type B ultraviolet (UVB) technology, Alma offers a highly effective laser pigment removal treatment option achieving favourable results for most patients.

While most UV therapies require treatments that expose both the affected and healthy skin, Alma’s UVB procedures only require treatment of affected areas, which minimises the risk of injury to the surrounding areas and significantly reduces treatment times.

Alopecia

Alopecia is an autoimmune disorder which causes hair to fall out. The amount of hair loss differs from person to person. Some people may experience only minimal hair loss while others will lose all their hair on their body.

As an autoimmune disease, the immune system attacks its own body, and in the case of alopecia, the immune system attacks the hair follicles, thus the hair loss. The cause of alopecia is unclear but is usually associated with family history and genes.

Laser treatments for psoriasis, vitiligo and alopecia

While there are various methods of treating psoriasis, vitiligo and alopecia, such as topical treatments and systemic medications, Alma’s light-based treatments provide patients with an alternative solution that includes no pharmaceuticals and effectively treats these autoimmune diseases in just a few quick sessions.

Excimer 308

The EXCIMER 308 system is a handheld treatment solution which uses a 308nm wavelength to effectively target psoriasis, vitiligo and alopecia. The 16 cm² spot applicator can be applied directly onto localised plaques, or masks may be mounted to adapt the spot size and shape to smaller areas. A variable power density ranges from 50 to 6,000 mJ/cm² and can be adapted to the needs of the individual patient.

The EXCIMER 308 enables you to apply high, therapeutically-effective doses of monochromatic UVB light while leaving healthy skin unexposed and protected.

Because these disorders needs regular treatment, the EXCIMER 308’s smart, compact design allows for easy, effective treatment wherever and whenever. It is also designed to be virtually pain-free and have zero downtime.

Alma Hybrid

The Alma Hybrid is another of Alma Lasers’ innovative autoimmune disorder treatment machines. The Alma Hybrid combines three essential elements in one device: CO2 for superior resurfacing; 1570nm for thermal remodelling of collagen; and sonophoresis for trans epidermal drug delivery. This allows for full flexibility and reduced downtime on treatments without compromise on efficacy.

FemiLift/PixelCO2

The FemiLift is a state-of-the-art, minimally-invasive outpatient solution that incorporates CO2 technology to provide optimal care for various skin conditions such as psoriasis.
